Media Evaluation

Q1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Like all magazines my cover follows the typical conventions, the Masthead is a main feature of my cover. The masthead is a vital part of the cover as it establishes the magazine for the reader, it gives the general idea of the genre of the magazine, I chose Vocalise as it is unmistakably linked to music letting the reader know what my magazine is about. My cover star is the main focus of the cover and of the magazine and so it is fitting for the image of him is to be on the cover, he depicts the style and feel of the audience I’ve targeted my magazine at. The image the simple and elegant, giving an impression of the artist without it being too busy and distracting. The information I included on my cover works effectively, it conforms to the typical conventions. I include incentives in the form of posters like most music magazines, incentives are a vital to sales of magazines drawing the reader in with the promise of free things. I also made my cover line a large feature of the cover so people know what is included in the magazine and decide whether they wish to purchase my product.

My contents page both conforms and challenges conventions related to contents pages. The main image on my contents page challenges conventions as I edited the images to give the impression of the band breaking out of the page, the front man then grips the page 19 graphic. This challenges conventions as it doesn’t fit the typical layout of a standard contents image. The layout is very confirmative having a list of my contents down one side, having a letter from the editor to build a relationship between the reader and the magazine making them want to buy the magazine more. I developed the idea of advertising a subscription typically they receive their own page for advertising but I included it in my contents page, this would instantly influence the reader into a subscription. I maintained a colour scheme throughout my entire contents page, a blue and white colour scheme was very simple and formal keeping a clean feel to the magazine.

The content of my double page spread has the typical conventions and uses them to address and inform the audience. The main image is used as the main focus of the page, I used a medium close up the get me of a detail picture of the artist face staring down the lens connecting with the audience, I used the image as the background so that it flows and creates a unity between the 2 pages. I added the sidebar for something that stands out against the rest, it was used as a way of giving the audience of small hits of information. I created a pull quote to follow the typical conventions of picking out important quotes for epenthesis, I chose to have the more important words larger and blue which draws the attention of the reader to these important details. The small text box for the Emerald Isles quote was kept separate as an added feature, its not going against typical conventions but its not used very often, I thought it would break the norm by having parts of the articles from other artists.

Q2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Many people are represented in my magazine, my magazine only stars males but different groups of people are represented. It represents artists in a positive way depicting them as sensible caring and creative people, they clearly feel passionately about their work, which is what they would want to come across in an article.

My magazine presents age a bit as all the artists and bands are young lads and the most creative people are younger where as the older people mentioned in my magazine are in positions of authority, producer and manager etc. This represents older generations as more powerful and have more authority where as the younger generations are far more creative and adventurous. There isn’t much reference to the fans except the talk about record sales, from the figures shown it shows that the fans are loyal and support these acts morally and through record sales.

I have dified the general stereotypes of rock fans, my representation is what most teenage rock fans actualy look and dress like so I feel like I've represented my audience in a way that they will relate to and understand.

Stereotypical Teen Rock Fan             ->

Q3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Magazines are usually distributed by a company that distributed many, many different magazines.  The kind of company I would expect to publish and distribute would be Great Magazines, they distribute some of the biggest selling magazines in Britain: Empire, Kerrang!, Q, FHM, Heat etc. They have experience developing and publishing music magazines making them perfect for my magazine, especially if my magazine is just starting out they would have the right knowledge do get  the magazine up to scratch and earning a large annual turnover maybe even big enough to rival Kerrang!
When it comes to retail WHSmiths are one of the largest chains of newsagents in the country, the stock and sell all kinds of magazines and bookazines of all genres. The wide variety of music magazines available at WHSmiths means that there isn’t a gap in their market for another Rock magazine even though many people who buy rock magazines buy more than just one, meaning there is a chance to still get high sales.  I would also expect for it to be sold in all newsagents and supermarket magazine stands etc.  These sources bring in massive revenue as it’s an easy and quick way to buy a magazine during your shopping or on the way home.

Q4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

My magazine is aimed at a younger adult audience, 16 – 30 years, to attract this kind of audience you need to be formal and informative yet bold and fun. My magazine contains images and information aimed toward this age range, I depict the wide range of styles worn by people of this age. I chose the style of my models carefully to speak to the different groups of people who read this magazine, so people would relate to the things they see inside. Having said this I’ve tried to avoid using stereotypes so I wouldn’t offend or mislead the readers.

This is taken from the Kerrang! Media Kit it shows the target audience to be around the 22 year old range and how they have achieved the marketing to these readers.

This is the Typical reader of the Kerrang! magazine this is the kind of person i have trageted my my magazine at, they relate to the things in my magazine.

Q5. How did you attract/address your audience?

Lots of market research went into the design and content of my magazine, I found out who most of the audience are and what they want using interviews and questionnaires. I’ve studied how previous media texts have attracted audiences in and how they refer to the audience and portray that through their content. Kerrang! Attracts a very large audience so I took a lot of influence from their magazines hoping for the same success. Like all magazines i used incentives to attract people to buy my magazine, incentives are always used as free things always draw people to the product no matter what it is as the consume instantly assumes they are getting more value for money. I address my audience frequently throughout my article addressing their role on the music industry and the importance they have in the success of an artist. I try to attract consumes to purchase more copies of my magazine through a large advert for a subscriptionon myy contents page, hopfully people would see it and want to subscribe of a discount price.

Q6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

The main piece of technology I’ve used to create my magazine is Adobe Photoshop CS5 , I’ve not got too much experience with Photoshop so I’ve developed my skills with it a lot over this piece of coursework. I’ve learnt how to use this technology to manipulate and create images and graphics to build up an effective piece of work.

Quark was another new program I had to use, it’s very tricky software to get your head around but it’s extremely useful, I was able to create a shape around my stars body and around the text already on my page, and then import my articles text into the interesting shape.

It was good to use such great equipment such and the Canon 500D Digital SLR, it gave great quality pictures and formed an amazing basis for my work. It’s an entirely new experience having this amazing technology to use and bring my thought to life.

The way I used Blogger to track my coursework was different to how I’ve previously submitted coursework, it was good to have a constant back up and log of my work and it’s very easy to organise my work.

Q7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

My College Magazine was my preliminary task in which I created “Crashin’ in the Crescent” it was a small task that allowed me to develop my skills with Photoshop and to get the feel for creating a magazine. My preliminary task was a chance to test out all my ideas and to toy about with some of my more abstract ideas, I found out what works and what doesn’t.
Looking back at my preliminary work I can see that it is too simple and very amateur, I made lots of mistakes with tools and chose of content on it. I’m glad I did this preliminary task so I could recognise my mistakes and not make them again on my final work.

My final piece works well I think and is a great improvement on my preliminary task. The images are great quality and work well together, the text and font used look better and fit the genre of the magazine and the whole thing looks a lot more professional.

Potential Names of Preliminary Work

Knowledge of the College
Crashin’ in the Crescent
Crescent Moon
Wicked Wicked!

Preliminary evaluation
Before I made my College magazine I explored a few different designs and ideas till I found a style I liked and suited the style of the given audience. I started with the title, I wanted something catchy and fun that related to college life at Priestly. I toyed around with some titles like ‘Knowledge of the College’, ‘Crashin’ in the Crescent’, ‘Crescent Moon’, and ‘Wicked Wicked!’ etc. In the end I went with ‘Crashin’ in the Crescent’ as it was funny and catchy and relates to the Priestley students.
The most important thing in a magazine is the content and articles inside, the main features from this featured on the cover to attract people into buying the magazine. Seeing as it was the beginning of the year it seemed fitting that there would be articles for new students to help them in their first few days at college. This is where I thought of the idea of ‘First Day Tips’, what to do in your first lessons, what to bring, what to do in your free periods etc. I also thought of a few other articles for example ‘Besting the Bullies’ but where it gave good advise it doesn’t give the best impression of the college.
It was a new experience designing a cover for a magazine so sketching some ideas helped me with my final design, I also took inspiration from January 2010 issue of ‘Rolling Stones’ magazine. It is such an iconic magazine from its mast head font to its cover stars so I took inspiration from that and merged it with my concept sketches.
Using Adobe Photoshop CS5 made it very easy to create a magazine cover, the vast use of the tool allowed me to create anything I could think of. I like how it turned out but I know it could have been a lot better, but as a newcomer to Photoshop I think it was the best I could do at that time.
The overall outcome of my cover is really good; I like the flow of the text and the colours throughout it. I think the picture fits the magazine as it depicts the social and friendly environments of Priestley College. Looking back on it, if I were to change anything it would be the layout of my contents page, I think it’s good but it could have been better by what I put on it and the design I went for. If I were to do it again I wouldn’t have had such a big picture as the main focus and even out the ratio of words: picture, but I do like the fonts and styles of the txt, by using a drop shadow on the sub title font I made it look more like ‘Rolling Stones’ font but still maintain the magneto style. I think it was good to incorporate the use of Facebook, Twitter and YouTube showing the social networking connections between the college, students and staff. Using the puff at the top will catch the eye of the reader because it is different from the rest of the cover and when people read it and discover if they buy the magazine they would also get a free pencil case, incentives are great for attracting people into buying a product thus this should help shift more copies of my magazine.

Market Research

I researched a few different professional products to find out their: target audience, sales counts, price and many other things. Kerrang'1 showed how they advertise and branch out their franchise to reach a wider audience and to connect with their audience.

Magazine Cover Analysis
The magazine cover I’m analysing is the March 2010 issue of Empire, this issue’s cover displays a range of conventions expected from a magazine cover and a great visual mise-en-scene. The use of many variants gives this cover something special and stands out above the rest.
Possibly the first thing you notice when you look at a magazine cover it the masthead, so you know what magazine you are looking at, the masthead font used on this issue is different from the typical font of Empire magazine. Due to the main feature being the film ‘Kick-Ass’ the font they used denotes the gory nature of the film, the font is a blood print on the wall behind Aaron Johnson as if from a scene in the film. It gives the connotations violence and action engaging the target audience of the film, this theme follows on throughout the whole cover.
The background for the cover is a kind of cracked plastered wall with posters on, these posters would have been put on as a different layer after editing them, this background has connotations of and urban theme and streets which are where superheroes are typical thought of fighting crime following the plot of the film. The posters they have used have been edited to look like comic book strips, as the film it based on the graphic novel of the same name. They have used a dotted pixel effect in the background of the posters like classic comic strips, put the characters name on banners as if the comic was introducing the characters and used pop are style colouring on the characters themselves.
‘Kick-Ass’ is written in a very large font and in a vivid green to draw the readers attention as it is the main story, the text has had splatters added to it to follow the theme of gore and violence and the angle of the two word are twisted in different angles, this could give the connotations of it being kicked and breaking off in different directions. The colours of the text are depicted from the costume of the main character and cover star, ‘Kick-Ass’- Aaron Johnson, he is the main feature so it maintains the flow from the green of his costume to the vivid green text on the page.
Another typical feature of magazine covers is to use quotes from the article within the magazine, Empire conforms to this convention a lot and do on this cover. “IT’S BLOODY, IT’S BRILLIANT, AND, BOY, DOES IT… KICK-ASS” it just one of the quotes, it’s almost a mini review on the front cover attracting the readers to find out what this amazing film is and why it’s so ‘brilliant’. The way that they made the words ‘bloody’ and ‘brilliant’ red makes them stand out more giving emphasis to the words. They also give references to other articles inside and ‘Avatar 2’, to show the large array of articles that this magazine includes, this text is also in a different colour separating it from the main feature of the magazine.
They use banners and a puff the highlight key statements and usually incentives for the reader, they cover includes a puff in the shape of a blood splat once again which says, “SEE KICK-ASS- FIRST AND FOR FREE! See page 93” this is an incentive to get the reader to buy this issue for a chance to win something and because it’s in a puff it stands out from the rest of the cover drawing the eye of the reader. They also use a banner across the top to point out the exclusive feature of this issue as it has a fold out collectors edition cover. This added feature makes it special and influences the reader to buy this magazine instead of Total Film perhaps due to the bonus feature.
This design could easily be recreated in Photoshop using the tools available in Adobe Photoshop CS5. Firstly the splatter puff is easily done by using a splatter custom shape or even a splatter shaped brush then change the colour to being white, to then get the text use the text tool and type in ‘SEE KICK-ASS- FIRST AND FOR FREE! See page 93’ then highlight the words ‘Kick-ass’ and change its colour the vivid green you’re replicating. To finish this feature make sure the text layers is above the puff and rotate the text box till it on the correct angle.
To recreate the masthead what I would do is first use the text tool to write ‘EMPIRE’ then use the magic wand tool to select the outline of the text, I would then import an image of a blood splatter and move the selected shape over onto the image. Then making sure I’m on the images layer click Ctrl+ Shift+ I to invert the selection and click delete, this should delete everything around the selected section leaving you with the blood image cut into the shape of the word ‘EMPIRE’, then move it into place. Around the image then I would add more images or splatter shape that look like blood to finish the masthead design.
The create to banner across the top of the cover I would just use the arrow from the custom shapes tool and draw it to the correct size then draw a triangle to fit slightly behind the tip of the arrow and make it green, then once again using the text tool right ‘AWESOME FOLD-OUT COLLECTORS’ COVER!’ and change the word ‘fold-out’ to green once again.
The make the large ‘Kick-Ass’ main story title would first use the text tool to create 2 different layers one which reads ‘Kick-‘ and the other saying ‘Ass’ then what I would do is rotate the 2 texts into position then merge the 2 layers to create one layer. I would move this layer into place then use the splatter shape once again and position splatters around the edges of the letters in the same green, then merge the multiple layers together to create the one image.
Finally I would import the image of Aaron Johnson, I would use the magic wand tool to get rid of the background of the image so I am just left with Aaron. I would then use the blur tool round the edges of him to soften the edges of the image giving the appearance of if all been on thing. I would then move the image into position and start the rearrange the layers.
First I would put the background in then layer the masthead on top, I would then put Aaron and the banner on top of these. After this is in place I would put everything else on top so the final cover had the masthead in the background with Aaron and the banner in the middle ground and all the other main features and sub-features in the foreground.

Double Page Spread Analysis
The Kerrang! Double page spread featuring My Chemical Romance follows all the typical conventions of a double page spread. This piece works as it flows together well and none of it looks out of place, everything from the pull quotes to the side bar and main image follows a colour scheme, allowing the reader to follow and engage with the piece.
The images used are all black and white and work well together; the main image is used as a background for the rest of the DPS creating a flow between the two pages. The filler images explore different parts of the article letting the reader relate and see what’s going on in the article. The black and white theme throughout the DPS works with the simplistic layout and design of the pages, the use of the red highlights important bits of the feature drawing the reader to these parts because they standout from the black and white.
The side bar works well as it stands out from the rest of the article and gives the reader added information, the use of subheading s on this sidebar allows the reader to quickly pick out the bits of information they want to read. The pull quote stands out due to its size and colour, the white text in the middle of the smaller red text signifies the importance of the quote and sticks with the reader throughout the rest of the article.

Music Magazine Version 1

This was the first version of my magazine, it was a good try for what i wanted. I was going for a Pop/ Punk style layout so it was quite busy with a lot to see, I realised that it was too busy and it was dragging the viewers attention everywhere. All the techniques are there just not really work to the full effect due to the overcrowding, in my new one i have made it much more simple without the crazy background i created and just kept it as a quite minimalistic cover. The colour scheme was too much, the over use of Purple drew away from the impact of the title making it stand out no more from the rest of the features.
